The main mission of the 4 Poles (ODATIS, AERIS, ForM@Ter & Theia) of DATA TERRA is to provide data, products, software, tools and/or services primarily intended for the French scientific community in the framework of its research on the Earth system. The information offered by the poles is also fundamental for the implementation of public policies. By providing a better understanding of the structure and functioning of the Earth system, work using these data has a significant socio-economic impact in areas such as natural hazards, climate change, mineral resources or water resources. In this context, the poles also serve the international community (satellite missions, international observation networks, partnerships for development).
The DATA TERRA centres are intended to be part of the national and European landscape in close articulation with the infrastructures in place and under construction. The organization in a single structure will strengthen the positioning of the French community in the European landscape and particularly in the development of e-infrastructures.
The definition of the scientific objectives of the data centers aroses from the needs expressed by the scientific community (CNRS-INSU scientific prospects, ALLENVI thematic groups, organism prospects). The needs of public policies are also taken into account.
Each data center aims to facilitate access to satellite, airborne and in-situ (ground) data acquired and managed by research laboratories or federative structures (OSU, FR, …), by national infrastructures such as National Observing Services (SNO), SOERE, the oceanographic fleet, aircraft and by space missions. The Poles federate or complement at the national level a set of activities that pre-existed either within infrastructures or in a more diffuse way. They bring together the scientific disciplines relating to a terrestrial compartment, offer value-added services and products, provide scientific expertise, promote the tools and methods developed within the French scientific community concerned. The products thus become more visible and the whole gains in efficiency from the sharing of experience and resources. The coherence of the 4 Poles (ODATIS, AERIS, ForM@Ter & Théia) and DATA TERRA adds an additional scientific value and facilitates coordination with other fields.
Disseminate and secure

To facilitate the exploitation of the information contained in the databases :
Technical and semantic interoperability (harmonization),
Common portal (exploration, visualization, extraction, analysis tools).
Produce and invent
Promote the combined use of different data (satellite, in-situ, sea campaigns),
Elaborate by combining different data sets,
Overcome the limitations from spatial, temporal and disciplinary boundaries,
Produce qualified and described data series according to the recognized standards in use (level 2 and +).
Train and inform
Offering support and expertise to users,
Participate in the scientific, methodological and technical training of the communities,
Contributing to the positioning and influence of French expertise at a European and international level.
